What is 49er R.O.P.?     49er Regional Occupational Program is a career preparation training agency that provides classroom and on-the-job training for high school juniors and seniors (at least 16 years of age) and adults. This program is beneficial to high school students looking to train for a career after high school or for those wishing to explore a career field before pursuing higher education in that field. This program is also beneficial to adults looking to start a career, to make a career change or to build skills for their current job.
How does R.O.P. work?     Most classes are Monday through Friday, two to three hours a day, mornings or afternoons, for one or two semesters. Some classes are taught entirely in a classroom/lab, while others are partially taught in a classroom/lab along with an "on-the-job" training internship for students at a local business.
Why should I enroll in R.O.P.?     You've heard the saying, "To get the job you need experience, to get experience you need the job." 49er R.O.P. will provide you the hands-on skills needed to pursue a rewarding career in the occupation of your choice. 49er R.O.P. is well respected by the local business community. As such, students who have successfully completed an R.O.P. class have a better chance of being hired over someone with little or no hands-on experience in a given occupation. All R.O.P. instructors have industry/business experience, and are known throughout the local business community. They can often assist their students in getting jobs in a competitive job market. Studies indicate that college students who have taken R.O.P. graduate quicker, change their college major less often, and do better in their college classes.
How long are the classes and when do they begin?     Our classes follow the high school calendar. Traditionally fall semester begins mid to late August and spring semester begins in January. Most classes are open to new students both spring and fall semesters.
When can I enroll?     High School students can pre-enroll with their high school counselors before fall and spring semesters when they are registering for their regular high school classes. Adults can pre-enroll in May for the fall semester, and in December for the spring semester. Check the How To Enroll page of this website or call 530-889-5949 in Placer County and 530-265-8848 in Nevada County for a class schedule and pre-enrollment form. Additional information is located on this website, see the How to Enroll page
How do I qualify?     High school students must be a junior or senior in high school, (at least sixteen years old). See your high school counselor for enrollment procedures. Adult students of all ages are welcome. There is no qualifying income level. There is no county residency requirement (except for Cosmetology).
How much does R.O.P. cost?     Most classes have a registration fee of $75.00 per semester for adults. A few classes have some additional fees, i.e., textbook, smock deposit, vaccinations, etc. High school students do not pay registration fees, but may be required to pay other fees. Additional information is located on this website, see the How to Enroll page.
Where are classes held?     Classes are held throughout Placer and Nevada Counties at the various ROP training centers and high school campuses. Class schedules and classroom locations are posted on this website, see Course Offerings page.
What do I earn after completing an R.O.P. course?     When a student successfully completes he/she will receive a Skills Sheet, listing the skills learned and a Certificate of Completion as documentation of training. This does not apply to short term or supplemental classes.
What About Earning High School Credit?     All R.O.P.s are fully accredited for high school credit as determined by the local high school. Some courses have also been approved to satisfy certain graduation requirements - approval varies with each district. High school credit is awarded by the high schools and is based upon the number of hours associated with each R.O.P. class.
Can I receive college credit?     Some of our classes articulate with a community college, i.e. Sierra College, American River College and Yuba College. Students who successfully complete a 49er R.O.P. class may receive a Letter of Articulation Certification from the instructor. The Letter of Articulation Certification can be used to petition the community for college credit associated with the 49er R.O.P. class completed by the student.
When R.O.P. students complete their R.O.P. training, are they prepared to enter the job market?     Yes. Students who have earned an R.O.P. Certificate of Completion are prepared to enter the job market. 49er R.O.P. is mandated to offer training that responds to the needs of the current labor market. As such, ROP conducts meetings with business leaders who review and offer input on ROP curriculum. Funds are used to secure state-of-the-art equipment and to employ instructors who possess industry experience in the field for which they teach. More than 80% of 49er R.O.P. students secure employment and/or continue their education within one year after their training.
What other related services does R.O.P. provide?     Aside from the hands-on career training in over 26 careers, 49er R.O.P. provides career guidance. As part of the R.O.P. curriculum, instructors teach students job searching skills, such as how to: dress for success, fill out job applications, create a resume, and handle the job interview. Students are also taught the "soft-skills" requested and required by all employers. These skills include: possessing a good work ethic, effective communication, punctuality, dedication/loyalty, and working as part of a team.
Will R.O.P. find me a job?     There are no job placement services provided by 49er R.O.P. However, students who train in local businesses often receive job offers after completing an R.O.P. class and R.O.P. instructors work closely with local businesses in helping them find successful R.O.P. students for entry level employment.
How can I be a business partner to 49er R.O.P.?     Each instructor works individually with local businesses creating internships for their classes. Interested businesses can call 530-889-5949 in Placer County and 530-265-8848 in Nevada County and ask for the name and phone number of the Instructor associated with your business needs. Instructors will contract and work with businesses to insure that the student will be assigned to an appropriate training experience.
Is 49er R.O.P. an accredited school?     49er R.O.P. is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
